A dry fruit where the kernel/meat is surrounded by a hardened pericarp. The biggest difference between nuts and tryma is that the shell does not open at maturity along a line of weakness. Nutshells do not open this way, meaning that they are indehiscent.
When discussing nuts, it is almost impossible to avoid mentioning tree nut allergies. To be clear, tree nut allergies are distinct from peanut allergies. That being said, it is a common comorbidity. Those with a tree nut allergy may experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, shortness of breath, difficulties swallowing, and or anaphylaxis.
One more item that I should note is that not all nuts that are botanically nuts are not used as nuts. For example, though acorns are nuts, when used, they are used as a cereal, making them a pseudocereal. In other words, the cultural definition for what is considered a nut is very different from the botanical definition.
